2024 New Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has described the eight year tenure of former President Akufo-Addo as one of the best in the history of Ghana.
According to him, many people have made it a point to vilify the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government when it contributed immensely to the development of Ghana.
He made it known that history will definitely vindicate the legacy of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Speaking during his ‘Thank You Tour’ on Sunday, April 27, Dr. Bawumia praised Akufo-Addo’s leadership, asserting that future generations would recognize and appreciate his significant contributions to Ghana’s national development.
“History will be kind to President Akufo-Addo for the bold decisions he made for the benefit of our country,” he remarked.
While acknowledging that some initiatives under Akufo-Addo’s tenure had faced criticism, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that these efforts laid important foundations for Ghana’s long-term progress.
He highlighted key achievements of the former President’s administration, including the implementation of Free Senior High School education, the digitalization of public services, and major infrastructure projects.
“These are not just policies for today; they are investments for the future of Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia said.
He further urged Ghanaians to continue supporting the NPP, assuring them that the party remained committed to delivering even greater progress.
“We are grateful for your trust, and we pledge to continue working tirelessly for the prosperity of our nation,” he concluded.
During the same tour Dr. Bawumia listed the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government sins that led to the 2024 election defeat.
According to Dr Bawumia, hardship in the country, arrogance displayed by his government, e-levy, the debt restructuring program and the lack of reshuffling of ministerial portfolios caused the NPP’s defeat.
Dr Bawumia stated, “The studies we have done so far, the big issues that people complained about were; the cost of living, there was hardship, arrogance of power and the debt restructuring program. The party suggested we reshuffle our ministerial portfolios.”
“For eight years we never listened. The party advised against the implementation of the e-levy, and the debt restructuring program. And yet we never listened,” Dr Bawumia lamented.
Dr Bawumia added, “The president announced there would be no haircut, all Ghanaians were happy, but when it came we gave haircuts. When you look the government was not paying NABCO anymore, where not paying afforestation, and the caterers were also not being paid.
Also, in most of the regions that the majority of our votes come from we did not develop the place, the Western Region the roads, the Market Circle we were not able to complete it”.
