The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has been issued a strong warning by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).
According to the GJA, the Special Prosecutor has ignored his mandate and has now made it his duty to harass journalists.
President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour issuing the warning urged the Special Prosecutor to know his boundaries or face the GJA squarely.
This stance follows the arrest and detaining of journalist Gordon Asare-Bediako of Wontumi TV by the Special Prospector.
According to Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the decision of the Special Prospector to arrest and detain journalist Gordon Asare-Bediako constitutes harassment and abuse of power.
Gordon Asare-Bediako was granted bail following his detention by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Asare-Bediako was reportedly detained on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, under unclear circumstances, sparking widespread reactions.
Reports suggest his arrest was linked to allegations he made against the Special Prosecutor. Asare Bediako claimed that the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, demanded a private jet from the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration for his private use.
He was charged for publishing false information and communication and later granted bail of five million Ghana cedis with sureties by the OSP.
However, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour while addressing the press in Accra on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, said the OSP’s arrest was illegal and unacceptable.
“We have instructed our legal team to take immediate steps to initiate a judicial review of the unlawful actions undertaken by the OSP which constitutes harassment of our member and clearly exceeds the powers granted to the Special Prosecutor under the Office of the Special Prosecutor ACT 2017.
“We hold the view that such actions are not only unacceptable but also illegal and we will seek a declaration from a court to nullify the actions of the OSP,” Albert Kwabena Dwumfour said.
