Dr Richard Selormey the General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association has cautioned the John Mahama government about the sacking of the Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO.
According to Dr Richard Selormey, If the government do not fix the fundamentals and keeps changing coaches like Manchester United real changes will not be seen at Ghana’s hospitals.
His comments come after the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced the immediate dismissal of Dr Adam Atiku the Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO following a visit to the hospital.
During the visit, the minister raised concerns over how the hospital was being poorly managed, and the recent death of a patient at the hospital attributed to neglect.
Speaking in an interview on JOYNEWS, Dr Richard Selormey stated, “The CEO has been asked to step aside, a new person has been put in place, and we have issues with the processes that have been undertaken to have that happen.
If you do not work on the fundamentals and you just keep changing coaches probably like Manchester United you will probably not see much change eventually”.
He added, “The truth is that the CEO bears the ultimate responsibility we at GMA have not denied this, and we are not in any way challenging the ministers’ power to go ahead and sack or employ some new person or not. We are talking about the processes onboard.
It is one thing to sack the CEO and it is another thing to go through the process that even helps you to build an understanding of where the real situation is, that is why even in a private enterprise you have to engage in an exit interview so that you can learn what some of the issues of the person where, were the emphasise were the good things the person did and the challenges they had”.
The Tamale Teaching Hospital doctors are now demanding an apology from the Health Minister and MP and urgent logistical and infrastructural needs for hospital management.
- Constant water and electricity supply
- Steady provision of oxygen and critical medical consumables such as gloves, cannulae, syringes, disinfectants, and glucometer strips
- Reagents to keep lab services running
- Vital signs monitors for high-dependency units
- Ventilators for various wards, including neonatal, pediatric, maternal, and emergency units
- Transport ventilators and incubators
- Repairs to essential sterilisation equipment
Meanwhile, Kwabena Mintah-Akandoh is set to donate essential medical equipment to the Tamale Teaching Hospital to support the facility’s operational needs.
