The immediate past Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akufo Damapre was conspicuously missing during a meeting between the new IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohuno and all living past IGPs.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, held a meeting on April 2, 2025, at the National Police Headquarters in Accra with all past IGPs.
This meeting brought together several former IGPs under one roof to share their insights and experiences in a bid to enhance the operational and administrative efficiency of the Ghana Police Service.
The former IGPs in attendance included C.K Dewornu, Ernest Owusu Poku, Nana Owusu-Nsiah, Patrick Acheampong, Elizabeth Mills-Robertson, Dr. John Kudalor, David Asante-Apeatu, and James Oppong Boanuh.
The discussion focused on critical areas such as personnel welfare, crime control across the nation, stakeholder engagement, ongoing reforms, and general issues affecting the Police Service. Broader topics related to maintaining law and order were also addressed.
The meeting emphasized fostering collaboration between current and past leadership within the Police Service.
It concluded with a commitment to holding regular interactions to ensure the continued growth and development of the institution.
Members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) were also present to contribute to this collaborative effort.
However, the absence of Dr. George Akufo-Dampare has raised many eyebrows, with many asking why he was absent from such a high stakes meeting when he recently left office and holds immense expertise to have contributed to the meeting.
The IGPs office is yet to provide clarifications to his absence.
In a statement by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President, in accordance with the Constitution and the Council of State, replaced Dr. George Akufo Dampare with COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as IGP
“President John Dramani Mahama has in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police.
“He replaces COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
“COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement said.
The new IGP Yohunu, who is said to be a seasoned officer with forty years of experience in law enforcement, assumes the role of IGP at a time when the police service is undergoing critical reforms.
