Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader has once again called on President John Dramani Mahama to call the hawks in his government to order.
According to Afenyo Markin, Ghana does not need those hawks in government and must break this vicious cycle as a political class and focus on real issues of governance.
His comments come on the back of NIB storming the home of Ntim Fordjour to arrest him with members of the Minority quickly mobilizing to the MP’s residence, insisting that the NIB operatives lacked a warrant and legal basis for the arrest.
The Minority in Parliament described the attempted arrest as an illegal and politically motivated attempt by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).
The incident took place at the MP’s Spintex residence in Accra on Wednesday, April 9, following allegations he made concerning two suspicious aircraft that allegedly landed at Kotoka International Airport, carrying drugs and large sums of cash.
Speaking on JOY FM, Afenyo Markin stated, “The government has explained its side of the story. If you disagree with the proposal that there should be a bipartisan committee, if you disagree that there should be a commission of inquiry, so be it.
You are a government, but you don’t, through your agents or officials, threaten the Member of Parliament and put him through such trauma. I think that we don’t need it, and I will call on His Excellency President, to call these hawks in the government to order. We don’t need them”, he added.
The minority leader emphasised, “Four years may seem far away, but it may be nearer than we think. We must break this vicious cycle as a political class and focus on real issues of governance so that the people will benefit from it”.
Meanwhile, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the former vice president and presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party in the 2024 elections has ordered President John Mahama to immediately rein in his security operatives.
According to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, State institutions must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents.
He further warned John Mahama that Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear.
In a social media post on X, Dr Bawumia wrote, “Last night, following the attempted raid by some alleged officials of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), I visited Hon. Rev. John @NtimFordjour, MP for Assin South and Ranking Member of Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior.
Rev. Fordjour was in high spirits and undaunted. I urge all Party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution.
I wish to reiterate my earlier submission to the President, H.E John Dramani Mahama, to immediately rein in his security operatives. State institutions must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents. Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear. Our democracy is hinged on due process and rule of law”, his statement added.
