Former Ghanaian boxer, Brimah Kamoko popularly known as Bukom Banku has taken over management of the Bukom Astroturf pitch.
Bukom Banku took over the management of the facility from the management committee put together by the previous government in 2024 without any authorization.
This forceful takeover did not sit well with some of the residents who challenged Bukom Banku. The retired boxer however told residents who are against his decision to report him to the president because he is acting in the interests of the community.
“I’m from Bukom, and no one can bully me because of the astroturf. I’m the caretaker. If you like, go and tell President John Mahama, the Vice President, or the MP. They pay directly to me because I’m the caretaker,” he said.
He added that the money he will generate from the use of the facility will be used to in maintaining it.
“I use the money to maintain the turf because it belongs to the community. It is a community park, so someone must be in charge—but not just anybody.”
The Bukom astroturf was commissioned in 2020 after the previous government transformed the origianl sandy park into a modern facility as part of its sports infrastructure development agenda.
However, by 2022, the pitch had deteriorated, with residents blaming the government for rushing its construction.
The park was renovated in 2024, with an administrative office added.
