The information gathered reveals the home of the Majority leader Mahama Ayariga Bawku’s residence in the Upper East Region has been set ablaze by some unknown youths.
Mahama Ayariga the member of parliament for Bawku Central had earlier issued a statement condemning the recent shooting incident in the area.
According to reports some unidentified Bawku youth vandalize and torched the house.
Reports indicate that the Majority leader’s residence was attacked by youth pelting stones, and breaking windows and other parts of the building.
The assault accelerated into an arson attack the following morning.
The military officers have since stepped in and taken tactical positions around the area to prevent further attacks.
There was an escalation of violence in Bawku yesterday 9 April when one person was killed and several houses belonging to police officers were also set ablaze.
A Police commander’s residence in Bawku in the Upper East Region was burnt with one person reported dead.
Reports suggest the violence erupted after a youth from one group directed market women from a rival group to vacate the area which led to a confrontation with police and a subsequent crossfire.
The private residence of ACP Adamu Seidu, the Bawku Divisional Police Commander, was set ablaze by suspected assailants on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
According to reports, tensions arose once again when members of one faction demanded that women from another faction vacate a local market. The confrontation resulted in the police swiftly intervening to restore calm in the market.
However, the situation deteriorated when some youths allegedly opened fire on officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire. During the exchange of gunfire, one civilian was fatally wounded, while two others sustained severe injuries.
The incident reportedly incited retaliatory actions, culminating in the arson attack on ACP Seidu’s private residence.
It remains unclear whether the property was occupied at the time.
Further reports indicate that a police barracks was also attacked, with a police vehicle set on fire. The severity of the assault forced the evacuation of personnel from the facility.
Security agencies have since intensified efforts to stabilize the area, though tensions remain high.
There has been an escalation of violence following the resurgence of a long-standing chieftaincy conflict, sparked by the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile.
Abagre fled Bawku after an arrest warrant was issued against him following his contested installation as chief in Nalerigu, a High Court ruling in Kumasi on October 17, 2024, nullified the warrant, allowing him to resurface.
Meanwhile, John Mahama days after his swearing-in embarked on a peace Mission to Bawku but the outcome of that meeting is yet to be seen as the conflict has escalated further.
