Kennedy Agyapong a former member of Parliament and flagbearer aspirant has pulled out of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Thank You Tour.
According to the spokesperson of Kennedy Agyapong’s Amstrong Essah who spoke to TV3 New Day, Kennedy Agyapong’s withdrawal follows the stabbing of a student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Kennedy Agyapong speaking to the media stated, “For unity’s sake, I felt it was important to join Dr Bawumia on his ‘Thank You’ tour. But from all indications, it’s very clear I’m not wanted.
“Because of yesterday’s events, myself and my team want to pull out because lives are threatened. I don’t think I can adequately protect my team.”
“The reason I am withdrawing is mainly to protect my people. But we will regroup, and at the appropriate time, we will also do what we have to do to help the party and enhance my chances.”
“I have seen that some groups from Dr. Bawumia’s camp want me to speak, so they twist things. I want to plead with the NPP fraternity to desist from such one-sided politics—it will not help us”, he cautioned.
Mr Agyapong also used the opportunity to declare his political intentions: “I want everybody to know, every party member to know that I’m going to campaign and contest. Nobody can stop me from contesting for the flagbearer position,” he declared.
Reports suggest the student is affiliated with Unity Hall (Conti) and has been hospitalised after he was stabbed multiple times during the NPP ‘Thank You’ tour at Bantama.
The victim was part of the Jama Group from Unity Hall hired by Kennedy Agyapong.
Eyewitnesses suggest a friend of Kennedy Agyapong at the event dashed the group some money after some gunmen suspected to be NPP members stormed the place and took the money.
This led to an altercation between the Jama group and the gunmen with gunshots being fired with one of the Jama members stabbed in the process.
The Jama group member was rushed to the emergency unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to receive treatment.
It has also been alleged that the stabbed Jama boy is a supporter of Hon. Kennedy Agyapong who was stabbed over a disagreement with other party members.
Meanwhile, Kennedy Agyapong has led his team to lodge an official complaint with the Ghana Police Service and the injured supporter currently receiving treatment.
The Ghana Police Service has yet to make an arrest so far.
