National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B), has dismissed claims the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is using the ongoing “Thank You Tour” to blame former President Akufo-Addo of the party’s woeful defeat in the December 7, 2024 elections.
Nana B clarified that Dr. Bawumia has not attempted to completely blame the previous administration of the government’s shortcomings, but has time and again accepted his role in the administration.
“I don’t think so. It’s not true… Throughout his speeches, he kept using the word ‘we’ — we, the government. He didn’t exclude himself. He was recounting events that contributed to our loss in the 2024 elections,” he stated.
Nana B explained that Dr. Bawumia’s remarks, including references to unpopular policies like the E-Levy, the emission tax, and the betting tax, were not new criticisms but issues that had already been raised within the party and even publicly acknowledged by key figures.
“Even I am on record criticizing some of these policies. These are matters that clearly affected our fortunes in 2024.”
Speaking during his ‘Thank You Tour’ on Sunday, April 27, Dr. Bawumia listed the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government sins that led to the 2024 election defeat.
According to Dr Bawumia, hardship in the country, arrogance displayed by his government, e-levy, the debt restructuring program and the lack of reshuffling of ministerial portfolios caused the NPP’s defeat.
Dr Bawumia stated, “The studies we have done so far, the big issues that people complained about were; the cost of living, there was hardship, arrogance of power and the debt restructuring program. The party suggested we reshuffle our ministerial portfolios.”
“For eight years we never listened. The party advised against the implementation of the e-levy, and the debt restructuring program. And yet we never listened,” Dr Bawumia lamented.
Dr Bawumia added, “The president announced there would be no haircut, all Ghanaians were happy, but when it came we gave haircuts. When you look the government was not paying NABCO anymore, where not paying afforestation, and the caterers were also not being paid.
Also, in most of the regions that the majority of our votes come from we did not develop the place, the Western Region the roads, the Market Circle we were not able to complete it.”
