Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has boldly stated as a Muslim he performed better than many NPP parliamentary candidates including Rev Ntim Fordjour.
According to Dr Bawumia, it is false to say that the NPP lost the 2024 elections because he was a Muslim.
He asserted that data at his disposal indicates that the numbers show he even performed better than some Christian parliamentary candidates of the NPP.
Dr Bawumia is quoted by JOY NEWS to have stated, “I, as a Muslim, performed better than many of our Christian parliamentary candidates, including Reverend Ntim Fordjour. So it is false to say that we lost because I am a Muslim”.
Addressing party supporters at the party headquarters, Dr Bawumia explained that his analysis of the election data and results of other research suggests that the claims were nothing but propaganda.
Dr Bawumia stated, “If you look at it, we were ten (10) contestants that went for the primaries. I was one Muslim, and nine Christians, but the NPP voted for the Muslim presidential candidate. So that could not be the case. I decided to do some data analysis to test this hypothesis.”
“The data is very clear. In many constituencies across the country, the NPP presidential candidate performed better than the Christian parliamentary candidates. So it couldn’t be if they were voting because of religion, I shouldn’t be performing better than the Christian parliamentary candidates,” he added.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have reacted to the comments made by Dr Bawumia saying, “My uncle doesn’t still know why he lost the election 🤣”.
“He’s even making his situation worse. Such utterances are dangerous”, another stated.
One X user also stated, “Who said it? Is it in the Prof. Oquaye’s report? Did the party not plan what to go and say at the thank you tour? This Muslim, Christian comparison/debate SHOULD NOT even be mentioned anywhere. It’s dangerous to @MBawumia’s campaign. @NtimFordjour paa?”
“This will further deepen the cracks in the Npp. The loss was solely due to some bad decisions of NAADA, which is a local knowledge”, another Ghanaian stated.
In the December 7, 2024, Presidential elections, the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia polled 4,877,611 votes (41.75%) against his key contender John Mahama of the NDC who got 6,591,790 (56.42%).
