An Accra High Court has dismissed a motion filed by the Ghana Police Service seeking to stop the anti-galamsey demonstration being organized by Okatakyie Afrifa.
The ruling follows a request by Assistant State Attorney David Bachem, acting on the Attorney General’s orders, to withdraw the motion. This paves the way for the highly anticipated anti-galamsey protest on April 28.
This ruling clears the way for the protest to take place as scheduled on April 28. The organizers praised the decision, highlighting it as a testament to the rule of law and the strength of the country’s constitution.
The Ghana Police Service had earlier secured a restriction order against Ghanaian media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah three a three-day demonstration against the John Mahama administration over their handling of the galamsey menace.
According to the Police statement, they have secured a restriction against the scheduled demonstration by the Generational Right Protection Society (GRPS), at the Jubilee House.
The Accra High Court on Friday, April 25, 2025, dismissed the motion.
Speaking after the court hearing, Okatakyie Afrifa stated, “We are in a nation rule of law, and rule of laws shall prevail every time”.
Only the court could have prevented us from demonstrating, and when we came the court dismissed the issue, they stated the Police motion had been struck out.
We are telling everyone on Monday at 2 pm, it is not about NPP or NDC, me being here I am an NPP member but the record shows me that Appiah Kubi took guns and arrested some Chinese it tells you how patriotic we are when it comes to the fight against galamsey”.
Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah announced a three-day demonstration against the John Mahama administration over their handling of the galamsey menace.
The three-day demo is scheduled to take place between April 28th to 30th, 2025 on the theme “Ghana’s Future Is Worth Fighting For”.
Okatakyie Afrifa rallied citizens to rise and speak out against what he described as a national crisis threatening the country’s environment, natural resources, and future prosperity.
Afrifa in a public message stated, “Our water, our air, our land, our future! Let’s come together to protect Ghana’s environment from the devastating effects of galamsey”.
In a Facebook post, Okatakyie stated, “ This is a call to action for our future not a battleground for politics. We must remember that our existence is being threatened by the devastating effect of this inhumane practice. Join us on 28th, 29th and 30th April. #GalamseyMustFall #GhanaDeservesBetter”
“We’re not just protesting, we’re proposing solutions. Join the conversation on sustainable development and environmental protection,” he said.
Okatakyie has however vowed that barring a court injunction, nothing would prevent anxious citizens from exercising their civil rights.
