The 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has once again reiterated that 2.1 million NPP supporters didn’t vote.
According to him, if the NPP decided to vote, they would have won the elections.
Speaking on the first day of his “Thank You Tour” at the NPP headquarters on Wednesday, April 23, Dr Bawumia stated, “Notwithstanding our hard work, we still suffered a heavy defeat. When you look at what happened, you will see that it was internal. Many of our supporters did not come out to vote.
“This is fundamentally why we lost the election. If you look at 2020 vis-à-vis 2024, 2.1 million of our supporters did not come out to vote. So, the key to victory is within the NPP because we decided not to vote. So, if we decide to vote, we will win,” he said.
The former Vice president further dismissed claims the NPP lost the 2024 elections because he was a Muslim.
Dr Bawumia boldly stated as a Muslim he performed better than many NPP parliamentary candidates including Rev Ntim Fordjour.
According to Dr Bawumia, it is false to say that the NPP lost the 2024 elections because he was a Muslim.
He asserted that data at his disposal indicates that the numbers show he even performed better than some Christian parliamentary candidates of the NPP.
He added “I, as a Muslim, performed better than many of our Christian parliamentary candidates, including Reverend Ntim Fordjour. So it is false to say that we lost because I am a Muslim”.
Addressing party supporters at the party headquarters, Dr Bawumia explained that his analysis of the election data and results of other research suggests that the claims were nothing but propaganda.
Dr Bawumia stated, “If you look at it, we were ten (10) contestants that went for the primaries. I was one Muslim, and nine Christians, but the NPP voted for the Muslim presidential candidate. So that could not be the case. I decided to do some data analysis to test this hypothesis.”
“The data is very clear. In many constituencies across the country, the NPP presidential candidate performed better than the Christian parliamentary candidates. So it couldn’t be if they were voting because of religion, I shouldn’t be performing better than the Christian parliamentary candidates,” he added.
Additionally, Dr Bawumia expressed his happiness with the Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye Committee’s report.
According to Dr Bawumia, the Oquaye report has put to bed a lot of propaganda about why the NPP lost in the 2024 elections.
Dr Bawumia stated, “I’m very happy that Prof. Mike Oquaye’s elections review committee have submitted their report. We have waited for this report for a long time. And they delivered the report on time”.
“And I must say that I’m very happy with the Oquaye report. It has put to bed a lot of propaganda about why we lost. And I’m very happy about that. They have also made some important recommendations for the party”, he added.
