The erstwhile Akufo-Addo government is said to have recruited 12,000 people into the public sector after their resounding defeat in the December 7, 2024 general elections.
This revelation was made by Minister for Employment, Jobs, and Labour Relations, Rashid Pelpuo.
This comes after the John Mahama administration faced widespread criticism for firing all public sector workers employed post the December 7, 2024 elections.
Heads of government institutions were ordered in a letter by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah dated February 10, 2025 to nullify all appointments made by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration after December 7, 2024.
Consistent with Government pronouncement in relation to near end of tenure appointments and recruitments, I wish to bring to your attention that all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after 7th December, 2024 are not in compliance with established good governance practices and principles,” Julius Debrah wrote.
He therefore directed that, “accordingly, all Heads of Government Institutions are hereby requested to take the necessary steps to annul any such appointments or recruitments and submit a comprehensive report on the actions taken to this Office by 17th February 2025.”
“Your cooperation in this matter is highly appreciated,” he urged.
The move is likely to impact individuals who secured public sector appointments or recruitments following the 2024 general elections.
Rashid Pelpuo revealed a committee has been set up by that President Mahama to investigate the circumstances surrounding these recruitments, particularly amid claims of unfair dismissals.
The committee’s mandate includes examining the timing, processes, and motivations behind the appointments made during the transition period. The outcome of the investigation is expected to clarify whether due process was followed and whether the move was politically motivated.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, Rashid Pelpuo stated:
“The President has set up a committee to investigate all the people who are complaining of being sacked unfairly. I’m a co-chairman of that committee. We’re working very hard to get them a response.
In that space of time, after they lost the 2024 elections, they [Akufo-Addo administration] employed 12,000 people within a week or two in all sectors. We’re now investigating it, and our results will come out soon.”
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and fairness in public sector employment, noting that the findings of the committee will guide any necessary actions.
