Aide to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Oheneba Nana Asiedu has dropped revelations of the cracks in the party which may have contributed to its woeful defeat at the December 7, 2024 general elections.

In an interview he revealed Chairman Wontumi was not in support of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s (NAPO) candidature as the NPP’s Vice Presidential Candidate.

According to him, Wontumi’s decision not to support NAPO was not because he was incompetent but only because NAPO had tried to prevent Wontumi from being re-elected chairman of the party in the Ashanti Region.

He disclosed that NAPO vehemently campaigned against Wontumi. “I didn’t support NAPO’s candidature not because he was not competent, but because he was not going to serve my interest.”

“Chairman Wontumi went for an election where he was contested by others, and NAPO campaigned against him. This was no secret. Wontumi however won the elections so why should be go and push NAPO’s agenda.”

Oheneba Nana Asiedu added that because of the friction between NAPO and his benefactor Wontumi, he also made sure not to campaign for NAPO prior to the elections.

“It was through Wontumi that God blessed me so his interest is my interest. He is my god on earth so if you make the mistake of doing him any wrong, I will come after you,” he added.

Matthew Opoku Prempeh became one of the frontrunners for the NPP’s running mate with the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia engaging President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, June 25 2024 at the Jubilee House.

His name was submitted for consideration during the said meeting which was approved by the President.

A final decision was eventually taken by the party’s national council at Alisa Hotel on Thursday, July 4, 2024 where he was named running mate.

Although some in the party were happy about his nominations, claiming it would lead to a consolidation of Ashanti votes, some claimed he was the wrong choice, insisting his pride and arrogance would get in the way of the party’s success at the polls.
