A viral video of Senior high School students inappropriately touching female students in the stands of Baba Yara Sports Stadium has surfaced on social media.
The viral video has sparked outrage over a disturbing incident caught on camera at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, during the just-ended inter-school games in Kumasi.
The video shared by SIKAOFFICIAL shows some students of Adanwomase Senior High School inappropriately touching female students in the stands of the stadium as they tried to pass by them.
There has been a huge growing concern about the rate at which Senior high School students have been misbehaving during their inter-school competitions.
Some Ghanaians in the comments section of the video have expressed their anger over what they describe as absolutely unacceptable, others have also called for the students to face sanctions for their actions.
One X user stated, “ Absolutely unacceptable. School spirit should never cross the line into harassment. Those involved must face consequences, and schools need to step up education on consent and respect. This can’t be brushed aside, it’s about creating safe spaces for everyone, even in moments of celebration”.
“Students should face sanctions. Are they aware of the disgrace they bring upon themselves, their families, and the school when engaging in such acts?”, a netizen stated.
Another X user stated, “The Ghana Education Service, the Ministry, and Heads of Second Cycle Institutions must take action to hold students involved in this gross intimidation, harassment, and abuse accountable. The level of bullying and indiscipline in our secondary schools is unacceptable!”.
Additionally, another user under the post called on the Education Ministry to allow teachers punish students, he wrote, “The indiscipline in the government high schools these days is appalling, and it must end. The Education Ministry should allow the teachers to punish students like these because they can’t wear school uniforms and disgrace the school by acting inappropriately and record it as well”.
An extra comment stated, “If we’re going to be very very honest, this and even worse was happening in our earlier time in SHS. The only difference is that there is social media now and it gets widely circulated. In our era, it just remained within the walls of the school but worse was happening.
Meanwhile, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in an old interview called on stakeholders to take immediate action to address the increasing acts of indiscipline being recorded in some Senior high Schools across the country.
GNAT expressed regret and disappointment at the behaviour of students of Senior High Schools (SHSs) who have been perpetrating those acts, especially in recent times.
The General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah who was speaking on the acts of violence being witnessed in SHS across the country stated in an interview with the Daily Graphic, “These are the people we are bringing up in our schools to manage the country in the years ahead, and they are ready to kill, maim and destroy; very sad”.
“We call on all like-minded bodies and groups in society to wage a campaign with us to end this blot on our national conscience and the education front.
We entreat the Committee on the Education Forum, as well as the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, to find an antidote to this wanton behaviour in our schools.
If we don’t, we remain hostage in the hands of our children, and we shall have ourselves to blame in the long run. Let’s remember, they say, ‘procrastination is the thief of time’, so the time to act is now,” Mr Musah stated.
