Some personnel of the Ghana Police Service are rejoicing in the removal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
IGP Damapare is admired by the majority of the public but within his own Police Service there were cracks within who questioned his leadership style.
According to the police officers, they have been yearning and praying for the removal of IGP Dampare for such a long time.
In a statement by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President, in accordance with the Constitution and the Council of State, made the appointment.
“President John Dramani Mahama has in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 constitution and consultation with the Council of State, appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police. He replaces COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare”.
“COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement said.
Reacting to the presidency statement, One officer, who was recording himself, stated, “At long last. The joy is all over, the joy is everywhere”.
“We are going to work. Right now, security is in our hands. This is what we have yearned and prayed for. We thank God… President John Mahama, God bless you. You have really listened to our prayers,” he shouted.
Additionally, the information gathered suggests both senior and junior ranks of the Ghana Police Service were unhappy with the regime of former Inspector General of Police(IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
It has been revealed that senior and junior ranks of the Ghana Police Service compared his leadership style to a dictator and draconian leader.
According to reports, Dr George Akuffo Dampare was tagged by some members of the Ghana Police Service as Togebe Agorkoli, Nebuchadnezzar and Herod.
The special aide to President John Mahama, Joyce Bawa Mogtari has also revealed why the President sacked the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
According to Joyce Bawa Mogtari, President Mahama had to appoint a person loyal to him, especially when it comes to the safety and security of the country.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, March 14, at the Jubilee House has sworn in COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP).
