Delvin Nelson, the son of boxing legend Azumah Nelson, suffered a harrowing defeat at the hands of Bitabiman in the Bel 7 Star Boxing League on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
He was defeated and lost his lightweight division bout to Bitabiman via a fifth-round technical knockout.
Nelson struggled against Bitabiman’s relentless pressure, finding little space to maneuver. Bitabiman landed numerous effective jabs, ultimately forcing a stoppage due to a cut Nelson sustained above his eyebrow.
“It’s an awful defeat,” Nelson admitted after the fight. “I think he headbutted me, so my vision is a little blurry. He’s a very strong opponent with a good right hand.”
28-year-old Nelson’s professional record now stands at one win and one loss.
Azumah Nelson (born 19 July 1958, affectionately known as the Professor) is a Ghanaian former professional boxer who competed from 1979 to 2008.
He was a two-weight world champion, having held the WBC featherweight title from 1984 to 1987 and the WBC super-featherweight title twice between 1988 and 1997.
He also challenged once for the unified WBC and IBF lightweight titles in 1990. At regional level, he held the ABU, and Commonwealth featherweight titles between 1980 and 1982.
Widely considered one of the greatest African boxers of all time, he is currently ranked as the 69th greatest pound for pound boxer of all time by BoxRec
Delvin Nelson was expected to be a prodigy in boxing, following in the footsteps of his father. However this bout has led to many Ghanaians questioning his ability to live up to the Azumah Nelson name.
