Operatives of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), invaded Akwatia in the Eastern Region in an attempt to arrest Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
The NIB operatives are said to have arrived at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) office in Akwatia in three vehicles allegedly in an attempt to take Ernest Yaw Kumi into custody.
According to witnesses, one of the NIB operatives pulled a sidearm in an effort to compel the MP to comply with their orders and accompany them to the NIB office in Accra.
However, party members present at the party office prevented the NIB operatives from arresting their MP, and chased the operatives away.
In a video shared on X, the NIB operatives can be seen being hooted at and chased into their cars by supporters of Ernest Yaw Kumi as they drove away.
Prior to the attempted arrest, Mr. Kumi is said to have participated in Friday Muslim prayers with members of the Muslim community in his constituency. He had told the armed men that he would voluntarily present himself to the NIB office if his presence was genuinely required.
The incident has heightened tensions in the constituency, with party members demanding clarity on the reasons behind the attempted arrest.
Ernest Kumi made headlines after a Koforidua High Court issued a bench warrant against him for contempt, citing his defiance of an injunction on his swearing-in.
However, the Supreme Court, in a 4-1 decision, has stayed his sentencing pending a final ruling. Justice Gabriel Pwamang dissented.
