On Monday morning March 17, 2025, a military officer was shot to death by unknown assailants in Bawku in the Upper East Region near a military buffer zone established in one of the town’s conflict-prone areas.

The deceased has been identified as a Warrant Officer Class Two.

According to John Mahama, it is unacceptable for the military to become a target of a conflict to which they are not a party.

John Mahama further condemned the high-handed response by the military who assaulted and injured many innocent civilians.

Speaking at his “Thank You Tour” in the Upper East Region on Thursday, 20th March 2025 John Mahama stated, “I wish to take this opportunity to condemn the killing of a member of the Ghana army recently in Bawku. The members of the Ghana Armed Forces in the conflict zone are peacekeepers who have been sent there to protect life, limb, and property.

“It is unacceptable for them to become targets of a conflict to which they are not a party to. I, in the same vein, wish to condemn the high-handed response of our men in uniform, which resulted in assaults and injuries of many innocent civilians”, he added.

John Mahama further stated, “I can understand the righteous anger at the loss of a colleague serviceman, but we must exercise restraint and use effective intelligence gathering to identify and bring the culprits to book.

“I wish, on this occasion, to extend my condolence to the family of the deceased soldier and, at the same time, to extend my sympathies to all those who were assaulted or injured in the military counteraction”.

“The progress of our nation depends on the shared effort of all its people towards a common purpose and a collective vision for prosperity. The Upper East Region, like every other part of Ghana, deserves its fair share of development”, he detailed.

Meanwhile, the Ministry for the Interior has extended the curfew imposed on the Bawku Municipality and its surrounding communities in the Upper East Region as part of ongoing efforts to ensure peace and security in the area.

The curfew, which will be in effect from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am, begins on Monday, March 17, 2025, under an Executive Instrument issued by the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.
