Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor has dismissed claims of the re-emergence of ‘dumsor’ in the country, dismissing calls the publication of a load shedding timetable.
Providing updates on the energy sector at a press conference at the Jubilee House on Friday, John Jinapor noted that such calls are unwarranted as the country was not currently not experiencing ‘dumsor’.
“Today, let me put on record that we are not shedding load and so the demand by the minority and some people that we publish a load shedding timetable is moot. When you are not shedding load, there is no need to publish a timetable,” he declared.
Although he admitting there are power system challenges, the Minister noted that there is enough power as Ghana currently exports 300 megawatts of power to its neighbors Burkina Faso and Benin.
“In fact, as we speak, we are exporting about 300 megawatts of power outside Ghana to Burkina, Benin and neighboring countries.
“And so, when you have enough and you are exporting power to other countries, obviously there will be no need to publish load shedding timetable,” he added.t
The minister further assured that although the power system is very fragile and weak, government is working to procure enough fuel and to make enough payment to suppliers in order to hold the system.
The Energy Minister further revealed that considering the huge power demand, government will require about 700 million dollars worth of fuel to solve the fuel deficit.
“In order to meet the demand requirements, we require about 700 million dollars worth of fuel in order to fill the fuel deficit because our gas today is inadequate to meet our fuel requirement,” he stated.
He said government will operationalize the Renewable Energy Investment Fund which will propagate the use of more renewable energy to limit the peak demand of power, thereby making huge savings so that we can continue to produce power.
