The information gathered suggests both senior and junior ranks of the Ghana Police Service were unhappy with the regime of former Inspector General of Police(IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
It has been revealed that senior and junior ranks of the Ghana Police Service compared his leadership style to a dictator and draconian leader.
According to reports, Dr George Akuffo Dampare was tagged by some members of the Ghana Police Service as Togebe Agorkoli, Nebuchadnezzar and Herod.
IGP Damapare is admired by the majority of the public but within his own Police Service there were cracks within who questioned his leadership style.
There have been reports of jubilation by some members of the Ghana Police Service after his sacking by President John Dramani Mahama on 13 March 2025.
Although no official reason has been given for Dr Akuffo Dampare’s dismissal, sources suggest the move is part of a broader restructuring effort within the Ghana Police Service.
In a statement by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President, in accordance with the Constitution and the Council of State, made the appointment.
“President John Dramani Mahama has in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 constitution and consultation with the Council of State, appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police. He replaces COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare”.
“COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement said.
According to some of the officers they now feel liberated over his exit as they claim the IGP Dampare regime was engaged in stunts aimed to win public backing while servicemen and women stumbled in suffering over his decisions.
The new Minister of Communication, Samuel Nartey George some years ago called out IGP Dampare as being more of a social media policing than doing real policing, he stated, “I am one person who is unconvinced about IGP Dampare and I’ve been very clear about it from the onset. I think that he is more about sensationalism and social media blitz than real policing. That’s my opinion and I may be wrong”.
It will be recalled some months ago Retired ACP Dr Benjamin Kwasi Agordzo, a Senior Officer of the Ghana Police Service, labelled George Akuffo Dampare as the “worst” Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Ghana’s history.
According to ACP Agordzo, the IGP Dampare’s actions have left the police service in a state of disarray and dissatisfaction.
Retired ACP Agordzo stated, “This is the worst IGP that we have ever seen in this country. Can you imagine an IGP promoting people without the promotion board? Can you imagine an IGP transferring people without a transfer board?” Agordzo asked.
“I don’t have any personal problem with him, but I am just speaking the truth as I know it. I can tell you that over 80% or not less of police officers voted against the NPP because of Dampare,” he said, revealing a significant political shift within the police force.
Meanwhile, special aide to President John Mahama, Joyce Bawa Mogtari has revealed why the President sacked the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
According to Joyce Bawa Mogtari, President Mahama had to appoint a person loyal to him, especially when it comes to the safety and security of the country.
