Member of Parliament for Effutu and Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed shock about the spirited defense being put up by key members of President Mahama’s government for the raids in the homes of past Akufo-Addo appointees.
According to Afenyo-Markin, these actions cast a bad light on President John Mahama’s presidency.
The raids, which targeted the homes of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison, have sparked widespread condemnation.
Security personnel reportedly carried out extensive searches, questioned household members, and seized CCTV equipment from Dr. Addison’s residence.
Following public outrage over the incidents, Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai justified the raids, stating that they were sanctioned and carried out within the confines of the law.
However, this explanation has not been widely accepted, with critics arguing that the raids are part of a broader political agenda aimed at intimidating opposition figures.
Taking to his X handle, Afenyo-Markin accused the government of using state security agencies to intimidate political opponents, a move he described as an assault on Ghana’s democracy.
Afenyo-Markin called on Mahama to take immediate action to rein in his operatives. He warned that such actions could erode public trust in state institutions and damage Ghana’s democratic credentials.
“Abusing the Rights of political opponents is a fundamental assault on our democracy! Ms Shamima Muslim and Dr Justice Srem-Sai should not have been deployed to defend such unlawful actions by the Government! Mr President, you are widely perceived as a moderate, but these acts of abuse of power by your HAWKS which are also defended by your own Deputy Spokesperson and Deputy Attorney General speak very negatively of your leadership. Please reign in your HAWKS now!”
