Two people have been reportedly shot dead in Atuba, a suburb of the Binduri District in the Upper East Region.
The incident, suspected to be linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict occurred on Monday, March 17, 2025, when gunmen on motorbikes opened fire on traders at a busy marketplace, killing the victims instantly.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammed, a veterinary officer in the area, and a local pastor.
Although the motive behind the attack remains unclear, it is believed to be connected to the protracted Bawku conflict.
This latest violence brings the death toll to approximately 76 since the conflict resurfaced in October 2024.
Meanwhile, top Ghanaian leaders including the Asantehene continue mediation efforts to restore peace and end the crisis.
There have been several casualties, including the killing of children and families in the ongoing conflict in Bawku and along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway.
Despite intensified efforts by security forces to quell the unrest and safeguard commuters, armed assailants continue to unleash deadly attacks, deepening fear and uncertainty among residents and travelers in the region.
There has been an escalation of violence following the resurgence of a long-standing chieftaincy conflict, sparked by the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile.
Abagre fled Bawku after an arrest warrant was issued against him following his contested installation as chief in Nalerigu, a High Court ruling in Kumasi on October 17, 2024, nullified the warrant, allowing him to resurface.
