An old video of now Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has resurfaced after news of the Vice President of Ghana, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang set to seek further medical treatment abroad following a sudden illness.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in the old video called for the implementation of a policy that prevents the executive, legislature and judiciary from seeking medical treatment abroad.
Ablakwa in the old video stated, “There is a need, to implement a policy, of no medical treatment abroad for members of the executive, legislature and judiciary with immediate effect”.
His comments have resurfaced again after news of Professor Jane Naana being rushed to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on Saturday, March 29, 2025, after a sudden illness on Friday night after work.
However, after administering the initial treatment, experts from the University of Ghana Medical Centre advised her to seek further treatment abroad.
It is unclear when she will be travelling to seek medical attention, but she is set to leave as soon as possible to restore her health to normalcy.
This health update was disclosed in a statement issued by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Sunday, March 30, 2025.
“We wish the Vice President a speedy recovery,” it read.
The government has not disclosed further details about her condition or the specific country where she will be receiving treatment.
Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is a Ghanaian academic and politician who currently serves as the eighth vice president of Ghana under President John Mahama since 7 January 2025.
The Veep has been said to be one of the key persons behind the NDC’s victory in the December 7, 2025, general elections.
She previously served as Minister for Education from February 2013 to January 2017 under President Mahama’s first administration.
She is a professor of literature and served as the first female Vice-Chancellor of a state university in Ghana when she took over as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.
She served as the Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa in Zimbabwe until her resignation in August 2024.
Ghanaians on social media have been divided in opinion with the vice president seeking medical treatment abroad.
One noted that when it was Bawumia, Ken Ofori Atta and others in the erstwhile government, it was a problem to seek medical care outside the country But today it’s OK.
According to one of the netizens, Ghana’s medical system is not working so every little ill politician seeks medical treatment abroad.
Another Ghanaian on X posted news comments made by now Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Prof Ransford Gyampo who both spoke against politicians seeking medical care abroad.
