Nigeria’s House of Representatives has ordered the Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC) to ban access to all pornographic websites in the country.
In session yesterday 11 March 2025, the lawmakers directed the NCC to enforce the ban and stated that internet service providers must block access to such sites.
A lawmaker identified as Dalhatu Tafoki stated on the floor of the House, “I would like to move a motion for the need to block internet websites hosting pornographic content and sanction the internet service providers responsible for the posting. The House notes that cyber pornography is fast becoming a global problem, and no concrete steps have been taken to cut its phenomenon in Nigeria.
“Nigeria is a highly religious country, and all the major religions in the country forbid nudity and obscenity in any form. Also note that countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have passed legislation that bans pornography in their domains.
“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings that there are psychological and sociological consequences for creating pornographic content.
“The immediate effects of doing pornographic content include a. promotion of adultery, prostitution, and other promiscuous behaviours, leading to addiction, escalation, and desensitisation, change of attitude towards oneself and family.”
The motion was strongly backed by other lawmakers in the House, the lawmakers mentioning alarms raised by psychologists and sociologists about the destructive influence of pornography.
Speaker Tajudeen Abass reiterated further issued a warning to internet service providers, who fail to adhere to the ban will face serious sanctions.
The move is seen as a broader effort to regulate internet use in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian House of Representatives’ move to shut down websites hosting pornographic content has sparked concerns among industry operators and experts.
According to them, such censorship could set a dangerous precedent for internet freedom in the country.
Some Ghanaians have also expressed their opinion on the issue, saying, “Good move …. Something I find really strange on Twitter”.
“This is good I must say. So meaning Ghana will be taking the Number 1 spot. 😭 Ghana should ban it too chale-it will help”, another stated.
Additionally, a netizen added that Ghana should be next, “ Ghana next!! We need our youth to start doing better for a better Ghana”.
A netizen even went further by tagging President Mahama, Vice President Jane Naana and Communication Minister Sam George.
“@samgeorgegh Please, the same should be done in Ghana. Persons found sharing porn and leaks on social media should be arrested. Please ban porno @JDMahama @NJOAgyemang”.
