New details regarding the events surrounding the death of a final-year student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Joana Deladem Yabani have surfaced.
Daniel Tuffuor was arrested on Thursday, February 27, 2025, after Joana’s body was found on campus early that morning. The university’s security service alerted authorities, who reported the incident to the police.
It is believed that the two were in a romantic relationship at the time of Joana’s death. Tuffuor appeared before the Prempeh District Court, where prosecutors requested his remand to facilitate further investigations into the matter.
A report shared on social media by an account named KNUST Gazette narrated, “After committing the crime and now making it look like some notorious criminals were the ones who committed the crime, it never came to his mind that there were CCTV cameras around so he thought the mission of not being found was complete…
Some friends of the guy reached out to him to ask him whether he knew about that case and he said “When they were going back to the hostel, they had an argument and Miss Joana told him to walk ahead so when he walked a little distance and turned, he didn’t see her so he thought she had passed a different route”.
The X account further wrote, “Around 6 am, our team @knustgazette received messages from students and people who came to see her dead body around 5 am… With thorough enquiry, we made a publication on the story and that led to the wide attention of the public and students and parties felt a lot needed to be done in terms of security concerns on and off Campus.
The Management in collaboration with the Ghana Police and the KNUST Security Services started investigations into the murder and the CCTV footage showed that Daniel was the mastermind behind the death.
In the search for Daniel, A teaching assistant at the Biological Sciences department helped to fish out Daniel writing his papers with the same shirt he used to commit the murder”, their statement added.
CCTV footage allegedly captured the moment when the suspect, identified as Joana’s boyfriend and a fellow KNUST student, as well as an alumnus of Prempeh College, engaged in a violent confrontation with Joana.
During the altercation, Joana fell to the ground. After realizing she was unresponsive, the suspect, Joana’s boyfriend, allegedly relocated her body to the university’s Disability and Rehabilitation Centre, where she was later discovered.
Reports also indicate that the suspect wrote his mid-semester exam this morning wearing the same outfit seen in the CCTV footage of the altercation that led to Joana’s death.
The reports suggest her lifeless body was discovered near the KNUST Disability and Rehabilitation Centre at approximately 5:00 a.m. on February 27, 2025.
Her body has since been transported the body to the University Health Services for further examination.
On Thursday, February 27 the Schools issued a statement pledged to get to the root of the matter.
According to the statement, a comprehensive investigation is underway in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), KNUST Internal Security, and the University Health Services.
KNUST has since informed the family of the deceased.
Students of KNUST have also been cautioned to remain calm and stop spreading unverified information.
Meanwhile, Albert Nat Hyde commonly known as Bongo Ideas has stated the number of deaths recorded yearly at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) looks like a yearly sacrifice.
