Chief Executive Officer of Bills Micro-Credit, Richard Nii-Armah Quaye says lecturers in business schools across the various universities in Ghana who have not achieved business success in the real world have no business teaching others.

According to him, such people cannot impact anyone positively and will only reproduce students just like they are, people with no business achievements.

“If I have my way, anybody who has not succeeded in business will not lecture in business school. This is because you can only teach what you know but you will reproduce who you are. So, if you have not built anything, trust me you will reproduce people who will build nothing,” he stated in an interview with ace broadcaster Bola Ray.

Richard reiterated that reading a book to repeat the same to student is not same as teaching something one has achieved over a period.

“Of course, what are you impacting? It is one thing to read something and come and tell somebody, while it is another thing to teach somebody what you have achieved and these are 2 different things.”

Comparing the Ghanaian situation to that of some advanced economies, he revealed that only proven businessmen and experts in various fields teach students pursuing same career paths.

“In the advanced economies, that is the way they’re going about it. So, you will find out that they’re training students or graduates who are very practical and insightful, so they come to the market after school and they begin achieving a lot because they have been well equipped practically from the classroom,” he added.

The business magnate revealed that his lecturer, Michael Mainwaring, at the London College of Accountancy in the UK, predicted his success in business.

According to him, his lecturer advised against staying in the UK to work after school and urged him to return to Ghana.

He told me, “Richard do you know what?, Go back home. Don’t stay after school. Teaching you I can see that you are a very smart student, you’re intelligent. I want to believe when you go back home, you will succeed way better than when you stay here in the UK.

He quoted his lecturer as saying, “when you stay in the UK, even though you are educating yourself in the UK, the opportunities here will be very small for you and you will not be able to compete better”.
