The presentation of the 2025 Budget and Economic Policy by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has brought a wave of relief to residents of Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, as the government announced the abolishment of several nuisance taxes, including the E-Levy, Betting tax, Emissions tax, and others.
The news of the tax cuts has been met with jubilation and applause from residents who have long complained about the burden of these taxes on their livelihoods.
Many believe that the move will stimulate economic activity and create a more conducive environment for businesses to thrive.
One resident, a trader, expressed his excitement, saying, “Is it true the betting tax has been removed? Then Mahama will be president again. He will lead Ghana for another 92 years. He will leave a long life.”
Another resident shared similar sentiments, stating, “Mahama has done very well for us. He will lead Ghana for a long time.”
He accused former President Akufo-Addo of neglecting Ghanaians and the Ashanti people.
“John is a name in the bible and he has done exceptionally well for us,” he added.
The abolishment of these taxes is expected to have a positive impact on businesses in Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region. Many businesses have been struggling to cope with the high cost of operations, and the removal of these taxes is seen as a significant step towards easing their burden.
The move is also expected to boost consumer spending, as people will have more disposable income to spend on goods and services. This, in turn, will stimulate economic activity and create more jobs.
While the abolishment of these taxes is a positive development, some residents have called on the government to continue supporting businesses through other measures, such as providing access to credit and reducing the cost of doing business.
Despite these calls, the abolishment of the E-Levy, Betting tax, Emissions tax, and other nuisance taxes is a significant step in the right direction for Kumasi residents and businesses. It is hoped that this move will pave the way for a more prosperous future for the region.
