Activist and Democracy Hub convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has reacted to his treason charges being dropped by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine.
It will be recalled that in 2022, Oliver Barker-Vormawor made statements which were deemed as inciting a coup against the Akufo-Addo-led government at the time.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor was arrested and charged after he allegedly stated on social media that he would lead a coup if the government approved the controversial E-Levy.
The comments led to his detention and prosecution on treason felony charges, a case that sparked widespread public debate, condemnation from civil society groups, and concerns over free speech in Ghana.
This brings to an end over two years of legal proceedings related to his alleged plans to stage a coup d’état.
However, the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has now decided to discontinue the case.
This decision comes as part of a broader move by Dr Ayine, who has also dropped other high-profile criminal cases.
In a post on X reacting to the AG dropping the treason charges against him Oliver Vormawor thanked some notable people who stood by him during his ordeal.
He thanked, Samson Anyenini, Kwaku Azar, Dominic Ayine, Justice Srea Sai, Godfred Dame, Fixthecountry, Cambridge University and Ghanaians who liked and shared his post.
Oliver Vormawor wrote, “To Samson Anyenini! For using his platform and voice to seek consistent justice on this matter; and for his grace in enduring attacks that can cause you to abandon principles.
To Kwaku Azar for staying true to his values even in intellectual disagreement.
To Dominic Ayine for showing that to be Attorney-General is to first be a minister of Justice.
To @JusticeSremSai- to whom I owe my life and more than words can ever articulate. ❤️
To Godfred Dame for reminding us about the enduring risk that individuals without integrity can jeopardize our democracy in ways that no human constitution can sufficiently cure or inoculate against.
To @Ghfixthecountry for providing me a vehicle to express my anxieties about our Republic without restraint or muzzling my voice.
To Cambridge University for showing up when it mattered!
To you, who only like and share. For trusting that even the unconventional can redeem.
To my ultimate belief in the profound possibility of a new Republic.
Keep trusting! Shalom”, his post added.
