A Ghanaian woman has asked where the money Ghana saved for not hosting a bigger Independence Day Celebration is going to go.
According to the Ghanaian woman, if the government say they are cutting costs, the Ghanaian people must know what the money would be used for.
She added that citizens are going to feel satisfied if they know that okay they can make the sacrifice because they are getting something in return.
It has been revealed that the 68th Independence Day celebration that took place at the Jubilee House cost Ghana GhS1.5 million,
According to the Information Service Department, the event cost the country 1.5 million cedis which is only a one-tenth of what it would have cost to it at the independence Square.
President John Dramani Mahama during the 68th Independence Day revealed this year’s scaled-back Independence Day celebration has saved the country 95% of the original budget.
According to John Mahama, the modest durbar was held due to Ghana’s economic hardship.
John Mahama revealed that a budget of GHC20 million was proposed for the event if it were to be hosted at Independence Square.
He added that hosting the event at the Jubilee House ultimately saved an impressive 95% of the original budget.
Mahama emphasised the move was necessary as they aimed to manage public funds responsibly.
President Mahama further acknowledged the sacrifices the country is making to manage its financial difficulties.
He further added that his government will prioritise the welfare of Ghanaians during a time of economic hardship and find ways to resolve the challenges confronted with the masses.
Reacting to the scaled-back Independence Day celebration the Ghanaian woman speaking to TV3 stated, “I think if I came for a big celebration of independence in Ghana, and I came and I could not attend because it is not a big enough space I would be very sad, very disappointed, but I also wonder if they are cutting costs, where is that money, that their saving gonna go.
Is it going to repair the road, how are the citizens going to feel satisfied that okay we can make the sacrifice because we are getting something in return, but if you just take something from people of that magnitude, it leaves people empty and feeling sad, she added.
