Sam George, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations has once again repeated State Broadcaster Ghana Broadcasting Corporation is not under his ministry.
Sam George’s comments come after Olele Salvador on X stated he was highly disappointed that Sam George has turned a blind eye to the broadcast of a private media entity still being amplified by the official account of the President over the state broadcaster.
Olele Salvador on X wrote, “ Hon @samgeorgegh, as Minister of Communications, I’m highly disappointed that you’ve turned a blind eye to the broadcast of a private media entity STILL being amplified by the official account of the President over the state broadcaster. Surely you know better.
Sam George responding to his post wrote, “ Please how many times should I repeat that the State Broadcaster is NOT under my Ministry. My Ministry is a Technology and Innovations Ministry.
There is a Ministry of Government Communications with responsibility for all State Media houses. Kindly speak with the relevant sector Minister. Thanks. 🦁🇬🇭”.
Some Ghanaians in the last couple of weeks have raised concerns over what they label as the takeover of the state broadcaster’s role by WoezorTV.
Woezor TV is a television channel owned by the Deputy Chief of Staff in Charge of Operations at the Office of the President, Stan Xoese Dogbe.
However, Stan Dogbe in a Facebook post revealed that no Media House reporting from the presidency, including the state-owned GTV, has been stopped from taking live feeds from the Office of the President.
Parts of his post read, “So, why are they making the noise about WoezorTV taking over GTV or GBC as the state media? This is so that WoezorTV, which is not available on DTT either, would not lead the communication agenda of the Mahama administration”.
“Does it even make sense that WoezorTV will take over the status of GTV? Under John Mahama, GTV and Radio Ghana have more access to the President and the Presidency than under any other administration”.
“Today, GTV broadcasts live from the presidency, including all events of the president, just like JoyNews, TV3, Channel One TV, WoezorTV, GhOneTV, etc. Do you know why? Because WoezorTV opened the way for live broadcasts and live streams, the competition has become healthy and beneficial to the Mahama brand”.
“GTV also goes live with outdoor events of the presidency at a scale never seen in Ghana before, and that is because the presidency has created that convenient platform for them and other networks”, he added.
Meanwhile, Manasseh Azure has also stated he see no problem if Woezor TV, like GTV, TV3 or JoyNews, has access to live feed and decides to stream live instead of making news out of events at the presidency.
He wrote, “If GTV, JoyNews and others have unfettered access just like Woezor TV, then there’s nothing to worry about. If they choose to record and play national events or events at the presidency, and Woezor decides to stream live, there’s no problem.
It would be worrisome if others were denied access to live broadcasts of presidential events and Woezor is given access because of its owner’s influence.
From what I know, programming, advertising and other commercial interests would not allow many TV stations to carry events live even if they have access. If Woezor has the space to do that, I see nothing wrong with it. A problem would only arise if access is rigged in favour of Woezor TV”, his statement added.
Meanwhile, the country’s Financial Administration Act reveals the budget must be presented before March 31, 2025.
In January 2025 parliament approved a Mini Budget to cover the government’s spending from January to March 2025.
Parliament approved GH₵68.1 billion for the John Mahama administration to spend.
The Government on February 10, 2025, began high-level discussions with a delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) led by Mission Chief for Ghana, Stephane Roudet.
The meetings, which are set to start today, Monday, February 10, 2025, will continue until Friday, February 14, 2025.
According to a statement from the Finance Ministry, the primary focus of these discussions is to review Ghana’s progress under the IMF-supported programme and to outline the government’s policy direction for the 2025 Budget.
