The embattled former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau Kwabena Adu Boahene’s lawyer has claimed that he has been denied access to his client.

The former Abuakwa South MP, Samuel Atta Akyea, lawyer for Adu Boahene revealed that his clients, have been held in custody by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for six days, violating the 48-hour detention rule.

Speaking in an interview he noted that, EOCO officials refused him access to his Kwabena Adu Boahene and Angela Adjei-Boateng unless they were present to record the conversation, a condition he rejected.

“They want to sit in the meeting and write. Why? What then is my use as a lawyer? This means we are collapsing the rule of law. The constitution is clear that every accused person has the right to a lawyer of his choice, so why don’t we want to abide? What is happening to Ghana? I cannot understand,” he said.

Kwabena Adu Boahene was arrested on Thursday, March 20, 2025, upon his arrival at the Kotoka International Airport from the United Kingdom on a British Airways flight.

At a press conference on Monday, Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, stated that Adu Boahene was arrested for allegedly diverting $7 million in public funds into his personal account.

According to Dr. Ayine, the funds were intended for the procurement of cybersecurity infrastructure, but over $2 million was allegedly laundered through real estate investments.

After being appointed Director of the National Signals Bureau (NSB) in 2018, Kwabena Adu Boahene has taken advantage of his position to gain significant wealth.

The politician’s wealth can be tracked as being invested in prime real estate in the capital.

Unfortunately for him, investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) suggest these acquisitions were funded through fraudulent financial transactions linked to a $7 million government contract scandal.

According to EOCO, Boahene and his associates orchestrated excess payments under the guise of government contracts, redirecting over GHS 39.4 million ($5.6 million) for personal use.

EOCO’s investigation has linked Boahene to multiple properties in Accra’s upscale Mayfair Estates, including:

No. 2 Stream Part Drive – A property valued at $1 million (GHS 15 million).
No. 6 Edith Avenue – Purchased with an initial cash deposit of $500,000, part of a deal involving five houses.
No. 7 Edith Avenue – Acquired for $200,000
