Amin Adam after the budget reading yesterday claimed the betting tax was never implemented by the Akufo-Addo Bawumia government.

Addressing the media after the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, former Finance Minister, Dr. Amin Adam, accused the government of deceiving Ghanaians by announcing the abolition of VAT on motor insurance and betting tax.

He argued that these taxes were never implemented under the previous NPP administration, making their so-called removal misleading.

“Betting tax that they claim to have abolished, we never collected it. It was never implemented. So, telling Ghanaians that you have removed something that never existed is pure deception,” he stated.

Reacting to Amin Adam’s comments, Patrick Yaw Boamah admitted there was a communication gap in what the former finance minister said.

Speaking on Lawson TV he stated, “10% withholding tax on gaming, which many called the betting tax that was 10% withholding tax,  and there is betting on winning that was what he was trying to say he didn’t implement that but, I have listened to the deputy GRA boss for domestic tax and he has also given an explanation that I believe we all should come to a common ground of consensus on what the meaning of those tax policies.

One on the 10% withholding tax that goes to the bigger gaming company and the little ones that were deducted from those who were betting. There is an issue and we will delve into it, but I believe the communication was not right yesterday I don’t speak for him, but there was some communication gap that when he meets the press he will handle it carefully and reasonably”, he added.

The NPP member of parliament further apologised to the Ghanaian youths saying, “I will apologise to the youths tomorrow he will explain it properly”.

Meanwhile,  the finance minister Ato Forson reacting to Amin Adam’s comment on JOYNEWS revealed, that the Akufo-Addo gov’t collected over GHS80m from the betting tax.

He detailed, “ I don’t think he is on top of that matter, because my checks reveal, that it was implemented, in the second half of 2024, and my check also revealed that, to date, the government of Ghana has collected over GHS80 million from betting tax.

So I don’t know what he is talking about it is not the fact, the facts on the ground do not support his assertion. The betting tax was implemented”.
