George Alex Mensah, a retired Commissioner of Police (COP) has revealed that he is not happy with Police officers openly jubilating the removal of former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
According to George Alex Mensah, he is happy with the change of leadership but not happy with the open jubilation.
Speaking on JOYNEWS on Friday, March 14, he stated, “This is the first time I have seen such a thing in the police service. There have been changes of IGPs anytime a new government comes. When Nana Akufo-Addo came, we had the first IGP, we had the second one, and Dampare became the third one. There were changes, but nobody jubilated, nobody did anything at the National Headquarters”.
“When Akufo-Addo took over, the then IGP was retired, but nobody jubilated. Why are the police jubilating now? That should tell you what they were going through during his period.
When Mr Oppong Boadu was changed and Dampare was appointed, nobody jubilated. Why is it that police officers are jubilating at the National Headquarters and all the police stations? That should tell you something,” he said.
He added, “I am not happy with the jubilation, but I am happy with the change in leadership because now we are going to have a leader who will listen and who will do the right thing”.
George Alex Mensah in an earlier interview also revealed, Dr George Akuffo Dampare can no longer be in the Ghana Police Service.
According to him, Dampare’s career in the Service has effectively ended following his removal as IGP even before he reaches retirement age.
Speaking on Adom FM, COP Mensah explained, “He can no longer be in the Service because he has been removed unless the government decides to reassign him”.
COP Mensah further revealed that IGP Dampare’s tenure wasn’t impressive.
He added. “His tenure wasn’t impressive, and I have said that before. If there is someone we need to talk about, it is the new one, not him. He is in the past, he is an ex. He did nothing.”
Meanwhile, Prof. Kwesi Aning a Security Analyst has weighed in on the Jubilation of some Police Officers after the removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
According to Prof. Kwesi Aning, the outgoing IGP Dampare stood up for discipline and professionalism.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One, Prof. Kwesi Aning stated, “What it means is that this is an individual and an officer who has transformed the service and made sure that the corruption, the clannism, the network that allowed people to take the law into their own hand simply did not work again,”
“When you stand up for discipline and professionalism, you don’t make friends,” he remarked, highlighting the challenges faced by leaders who prioritize integrity over popularity”, he added.
