Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has vowed to hold those responsible for the disappearance of over 1,347 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) accountable.
According to him, he will stop at nothing to retrieve the missing containers, prosecute the perpetrators, and recover the cost incurred.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, March 28, he revealed that upon assuming office, he was given conflicting figures regarding the number of containers.
While the Transition Committee initially mentioned 3,000, he was later informed that 2,500 were at the harbor.
This, he said, raised his suspicions, prompting him to set up a committee to investigate the matter.
The findings, he noted, confirmed that over 1,300 containers could not be accounted for.
He stated that investigations have led to the discovery of warehouses and factories where brand-new aluminum cables were allegedly melted into rods and exported.
“These are the facts and nothing but the facts. Mr. Speaker these are the facts so those who are on social media and trying to play the political game let me assure you it will not deter me,” he said.
Some foreign nationals including Chinese, he disclosed, have already been arrested, while others, including Indian nationals, are on the run.
“This is a house of records and so I’m being very very cautious. I have received a lot of briefings and I’m getting to know those who are behind it. This is been going on for years. I will stop that and it will stop right now,” he asserted.
Mr. Jinapor assured the public that the government will retrieve the missing materials and ensure those behind the illegal operations face the full force of the law.
He further emphasized that the disappearance of these essential materials has contributed to instability in the power distribution system, as resources meant for improving electricity supply have been diverted.
The minister maintained that the matter will not be swept under the rug, adding that he will ensure transparency by making the
investigative report public.
He called on the public to stay informed and support efforts to combat corruption within the sector.
