Alban Bagbin the Speaker of Parliament has finally ordered a formal investigation to identify the member of parliament who referred to Klottey Korle MP, Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings a ‘daughter of a murderer on the floor of parliament.
According to Alban Bagbin, the member of parliament if found guilty could face a suspension not exceeding 9 months or expelled from parliament.
Alban Bagbin further advised the member of parliament responsible to within a week show honesty and plead guilty rather than wait for the outcome of the investigation.
Speaker Bagbin’s directive comes following a petition from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Speaker Bagbin to investigate the matter.
On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, the Volta Diaspora Caucus also presented a petition to the Speaker to investigate the matter.
Receiving a petition in Parliament from the Volta Diaspora Caucus Bagbin stated, “I advise the member responsible to within the week to show honesty and plead than wait for the outcome of investigations”.
“guilty of defamation… will be liable to be reprimanded or suspended for a period not exceeding 9 months or expelled from Parliament altogether”, Alban Bagbin revealed.
The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin was on the floor addressing Parliament on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, when a loud voice from the back bench from the Minority in Parliament called a Majority MP “Daughter of a murderer, sit down! Daughter of a murderer, sit down!”
It was later discovered the voice was referring to the Klottey Korle MP, Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings while she was making a submission on the floor of the House.
Following the incident, both the majority and minority have condemned the comment against Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings.
Initially, social media users claimed MP for Damongo, Samuel Abu Jinapor made that comment but he came out to dismiss the claims.
Speaking to the media, Samuel Abu Jinapor stated, “I do not speak in that manner; the words attributed to me are not mine, The words being falsely attributed to me are not words I will ever use”.
“I didn’t even know such words had been uttered. When the video was brought to my attention, I found it totally false. It cannot be correct”, he added.
Abu Jinapor further expressed his deep respect for the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.
“When his children established a foundation for tree planting, I was the guest of honour. It is on record what I said about him”, he added.
This warning comes after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) requested Speaker Bagbin to investigate the matter, and a new petition from the Volta Diaspora Caucus on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, to the Speaker to investigate the matter.
Receiving a petition in Parliament from the Volta Diaspora Caucus who organised a protest on Tuesday demanding an apology from the MP responsible for the comment, Bagbin said a lot of work has been done and urged the member responsible to own up.
