Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has extended support to traders in Kumasi’s Adum area, who were affected by fire on March 21, 2025.

The blaze, which ravaged dozens of shops, left traders reeling from the loss of goods worth millions of Ghana cedis.

During his visit, Dr. Bawumia called for patience as the Ghana National Fire Service continues its investigation into the cause of the fire, with the aim of preventing such incidents in the future.

“We need to wait on the investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service to determine the cause of the fire and ensure steps are taken to prevent it from happening again”.

Dr. Bawumia called on the government to fast-track the completion of the Kejetia Central Market Phase II project, which, according to him, was approximately 80% complete when the NPP left office.

He believes its completion would provide a conducive environment for the traders to rebuild their businesses.

A two-story building housing several shops in the central business district of Adum in Kumasi caught fire.

The fire happened at the popular Blue Light arena, close to Hello FM.

Reports suggest the fire started around 6 am and spread rapidly as fire officers made attempts to contain the blaze.

According to reports some shop owners attempted to defy the ravaging fire to salvage their goods.

It has also been revealed that a shop owner had to be forced out, and at a point, a ladder was needed to evacuate him from danger.

The information available suggests Most of the shops deal in mobile phones and accessories, jewellery, and clothing.

An eyewitness account claims the fires started from a touching electricity pole in the area, leading to a sparkle on the top floor of one of the buildings.

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service are at the scene but is facing difficulties accessing the building.
