Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has championed calls for the establishment of a special hospital for Members of Parliament (MPs).
According to him, MPs having such a private hospital will go a long way to address their health issues while maintaining confidentiality.
He made his clarion call during the inauguration of the Parliamentary Service Board for the ninth Parliament on Monday, March 17, 2025. It was during this inauguration that Alexander Afenyo-Markin underscored the unique difficulties parliamentarians face in accessing private healthcare.
Afenyo-Markin suggested that establishing a parliamentary hospital would be a crucial step in protecting the health and privacy of lawmakers, given the heightened public scrutiny they often endure when seeking medical care.
“Mr. Speaker, there are two things that I hope for in this ninth parliament. One is a hospital for parliament. If it does happen, according to your vision, it will be a great milestone. We are a political class and our health issues must be known within certain confines. Because of confidentially issues people travel abroad at great cost for medical support. I believe if we are able to deal with this, it will help,” he stated.
Additionally, the minority leader, proposed the establishment of a new Parliamentary chamber to enhance the security of Members of Parliament.
He emphasized the need for a new infrastructure that reflects the importance of the legislative arm of government.
“Mr. Speaker, you’ve also talked about security. Indeed, when I visited the House, the British Parliament, even within the chamber, there is enhanced security. Here in the public anybody at all can throw any thing at a Member of Parliament, and there is no security, Mr. Speaker I am therefore looking forward to enhanced security in the chamber,” he said.
