The Accra High Court has reduced the bail condition for the embattled former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, from GHS120 million to GHS80 million.
Angela Adjei Boateng, his wife however, continues to face bail set at GHS80 million, with two sureties required to be justified.
Both individuals are mandated to report to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) three times a week.
Additionally, their travel has been restricted, requiring express permission from EOCO for any trips.
The couple were in custody following an investigation by EOCO into allegations of embezzlement, fraud, and illicit financial transactions.
Adu-Boahene, who served as NSB Director-General from 2017 until February 2025, is accused of diverting millions of Ghanaian cedis of state funds into personal accounts.
Reacting to the court’s ruling, the couple’s legal representative, Samuel Atta Akyea, expressed optimism that his client would meet the revised bail conditions successfully.
Lawyers of Adu Boahene and his wife contested what they described as “unjustifiably harsh” bail conditions imposed by prosecutors.
Adu-Boahene’s legal team argued that the initial bail demands GH¢120 million for him and GH¢80 million for his wife, are excessive and designed to prolong their detention beyond the legally permitted 48-hour period without trial.
“The Respondents with a clear motive to incarcerate the Applicants beyond the 48-hour period as spelt out by the Constitution have imposed burdensome and unreasonable conditions on the Applicants as the precondition for their granting them bail,” the defense team stated.
The lawyers further claim that the bail conditions infringe on their clients’ rights, describing the move as a violation of their liberty.
They also accuse the state of obstructing due process by denying proper legal counsel and fair treatment.
