Pro New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist and supporter known as General Buhari, has chastised Minister for Communication, Sam George over the suspension of the licenses of seven (7) radio stations.
According to him, this move will render countless jobless and will only cause sadness in their homes.
In an X post, he wrote, “These Radio station has employed close to 100 people, Today, they’re all going home unemployed as a result of this directive. It’s sad.”
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George yesterday, February 18, 2025 directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to shut down 7 radio stations.
According to Sam George, one of the stations Gumah FM in Bawku was shut down on national security grounds, while the remaining six were found to be operating without valid frequency authorization.
The statement issued revealed that Gumah FM has been used as a platform to incite violence disrupt public order and escalate tension in the North East Region.
The stations are:
- Fire Group of Companies, Sunyani – 90.1MHz
- I-Zar Consult Limited, Tamale – 89.7MHz
- Abochannel Media Group, Adidome – 105.7MHz
- Okyeame Radio Limited, Bibiani – 99.7MHz
- Mumen Bono Foundation, Techiman – 99.7MHz
- Osikani Community FM, Nkrankwanta – 99.7MHz
- Gumah FM in Bawku
Part of the communication ministry statement reads, “It is unlawful to operate a broadcasting service without a valid frequency authorization,” the statement emphasized, adding that the NCA will take immediate steps to halt all unauthorized transmissions and enforce compliance”.
Meanwhile, Sam George in a post on X stated, “Today, in two separate cases, I have directed the @NCAGhana to suspend and enforce a prohibition of broadcast on seven (7) radio stations in total.”
“In one instance, on national security grounds and in six other cases on the grounds of broadcasting without a valid frequency authorization based on the recently requested frequency audit. Enforcement of the directive is immediate. Further action would be taken in the coming days”, he added.
He further added, “Once again, I reiterate my commitment to sanitizing our airwaves and ensuring strict adherence with the law concerning frequency authorizations. I urge all media houses to ensure they are complying with ALL the terms of their frequency authorizations”.
