Former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yaw Owusu Obimpeh has emerged victorious in the Ashanti Regional Council of State elections.
He emerged victorious by securing 49 votes out of the total of 85 votes cast.
Nkansah Boadu Nana Ayeboafo followed with 35 votes, while Daniel Anarfi Yamoah garnered only 1 vote. One member of the electoral college failed to show up for the election.
Out of the expected 86 votes, a total of 85 valid votes were cast, with no rejected ballots. The results reflect a strong endorsement of Yaw Owusu Obimpeh’s candidacy by the electorate in the Ashanti Region.
Obimpeh’s election comes after the suspension of the first election last week following a chaos that ensued during the process.
The elections were rescheduled to today, Monday February 17, 2025 after violent altercations disrupted the sorting and counting of ballots at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council.
The Electoral Commission (EC) suspended the elections as the voting center was forcefully invaded by unknown assailants, who destroyed ballot boxes, and scattered voting materials.
The violence is said to have been caused by the unexpected defeat of National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, who was considered the favourite to win the election.
Security at the Prempeh Assembly hall for the re-run was tight as they sought to prevent violent clashes which marred the main elections last week.
The police stationed a water cannon and mounted barriers all around the voting center in a bid to ensure peace.
