Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has asked the Mahama led government to recall all public sector workers who had their appointments terminated for being employed after December 7, 2024 to be recalled.
According to him, their recall is the only condition of the minority caucus if the government wants them to partake in the proposed National Economic Dialogue.
His statement comes in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s call for the Minority to participate in the upcoming National Economic Dialogue, which aims to assess Ghana’s economic situation and build consensus on key policies to address the ongoing economic crisis.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, February 27, 2025, Oppong Nkrumah made it clear that the Minority’s participation hinges on the government reversing its decision to terminate the employment of these young workers.
“We are happy to participate in the National Economic Dialogue if the administration will reinstate the thousands of young people that it has sacked from public sector jobs,” he stated.
“You don’t get to sack young people from the jobs that they have been rightly employed to, and say that after you had sacked them, and you are home, you are inviting us to a national economic dialogue. Reinstate them, invite us to a national economic dialogue, and we will participate in it,” he added.
President Mahama indicated that discussions at the dialogue will be focused on finding out structural reforms and setting policy priorities to steer the country’s economy in the right direction.
The dismissal of these workers has been a contentious issue, with the Minority strongly opposing the move, arguing that it has worsened unemployment and economic hardship in the country.
As the government pushes forward with its plan for economic discussions, it remains to be seen whether it will address the concerns raised by the Minority to ensure their participation in the dialogue.
