First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor has indicated that the Majority Caucus refuses to flaunt the power in their numbers in the face of the Minority.
He shared that the Majority always seeks to build consensus with the Minority when it could have chosen to bully its way through Parliamentary decisions with its numbers.
According to him, this nature of theirs is what has caused the recent boisterous behavior of the Minority.
“You see, if you look at the posture of the Majority, were not even going the majoritarian way. We still want to build consensus even at the vetting committee. We want to work and come out with a report in a very unanimous manner. We never exhibited to the effect that we have a Majority so this is the way we want to go. That is why sometimes we over accommodate them,” he revealed.
Bernard Ahiafor reminded the Minority that the Majority in Parliament has the numerical strength “but we don’t want to bully them by way of using our numerical strength.”
The Majority and Minority Caucus in Parliament have had several impasses since the constitution of the 9th Parliament.
Although the Majority has the largest number in Parliament, they do not lord it over the Minority caucus which now refers to itself as a “Mighty Minority”, and time and time again forget they are few in number, causing chaos and disruption in Parliamentary business at any given opportunity.
