Member of Parliament (MP) for Ada on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah says oral and anal sex are the major cause of cholera in recent times.
According to her, it is high time the government pays attention to rising incidents of oral and anal sex and their contribution to the increasing cases of cholera, rather than just focus on traditional causes.
Speaking on the floor or parliament, she stated, “Mr. speaker, let’s be honest eating faeces is what causes cholera. Where are we getting faeces to eat? From the insects and flies then vendors then the latest one Mr. Speaker which we are not watching is the bedroom. Now people are eating faeces in the bedroom so we should check all those areas.”
Madam Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah indicated that if care is not taken, fingers will always be pointed at innocent food vendors when there are cholera discussions.
She highlighted the need for government to rope in chiefs in the sanitation fight. “Mr. Speaker we need to revisit how we are managing sanitation. We have chiefs in so many areas and if we detail them alone and gov’t instructs every chief and makes them manage the cleaning of their environment, we can curb cholera.”
The Minister of Health has been summoned to update the House on measures being taken by the government to contain the spread of cholera.
Over 400 cholera cases have been recorded in the Central region while 14 deaths have been reported from the cerebrospinal meningitis outbreak in the Upper West Region.
Alexander Afenyo Markin, Member of Parliament for Effutu has appealed to the Health Ministry to deploy supportive staff to Winneba Health Facility to enable them to contain the outbreak to save the lives of his constituents.
“Mr Speaker it has been reported that 412 cases of outbreak of cholera in Effutu municipality have claimed three lives. Currently, we have the affected in the Winneba Municipal Hospital, the UEW Clinic and the Winneba Health Centre. Mr Speaker, the facilities there are very stressed. Most of these cases are coming from the shelves. The central government must immediately intervene to save lives.
“We also need supporting staff to be deployed to Winneba and the minister of health must direct other health professionals to enable them to contain the outbreak,” he remarked.
