Chaos has erupted in the Ashanti Regional Council of State elections.
Reports suggest that heavily built men have disrupted the voting process, destroying Electoral Commission (EC) materials and physically attacking some journalists.
In the video-making runs on social media, some men were seen forcing their way through a police barricade at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council premises.
It has also been reported that an incident also occurred during the Greater Accra region’s election, but the Ghana Police Service interfered promptly to return lawfulness.
The election has since been halted in the Ashanti Region, with the security services in the region yet to restore calm.
The chaos is believed to have been initiated by the sudden defeat of National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, who was widely regard as a prime candidate.
Meanwhile, according to the Electoral Commission (EC), a total of 155 candidates from all 16 regions of Ghana have filed their nominations to contest with 145 males and 10 females.
The election of regional representatives to the Council of State will take place in all the regional capitals.
The Council of State elections will decide regional representatives who will advise President John Dramani Mahama on key state issues.
The applicants have fruitfully gone through the nomination process, which required them to meet specific eligibility criteria as set by the EC.
The Council of State election is not open to the general public like the parliamentary and presidential elections, Ghana’s 261 District Assemblies will nominate two representatives who will cast their votes.
Established under Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution, the Council serves as a key consultative body, offering expert advice on governance-related issues, national security, economic development, and other critical state affairs.
They are constitutionally instructed as an advisory body that guides the President on policy formulation and national governance.
