Dr Tony Aidoo, an NDC stalwart and former Ghana Ambassador to the Netherlands has narrated a sad story of how the New Patriotic Party (NPP) chased out Fantes from the Ashanti region.
According to Dr Tony Aidoo, in the 60s during the period of ethnic cleansing National Liberation Movement(NLM), witnessed a lot of atrocities.
He revealed that atrocities were meted out to persons who were not Ashantis.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with JOY NEWS, Dr Tony Aidoo narrated the sad story, “I saw the atrocities, that were meted out to persons who were not Ashantis that was the period of ethnic cleansing NLM (National Liberation Movement) they say Fante people go to your hometown, Anlo people go to your home”.
Dr Tony Aidoo further revealed how a woman was killed right infront of him when he was just six and a half years old.
He narrated further, “One afternoon at two o clock I was just about six and a half years old, I was sick so My great-grandmother was the one looking after me, Kumasi houses they are compound houses”.
“Suddenly we heard this Fante woman, who used to be a bread seller run and she was being chased by four stalwart NPP action troopers from the king’s palace, the palace itself seeking sanctuary and saying Nana I am seeking your sanctuary they just dragged this woman laid her and pounded her with mortar right in front of me and my grandmother, this was in the 60s killed her right in front of us”, he added calmly.
Some Ghanaians under the post acknowledged that a lot of atrocities happened in the past saying, “ Many wrongs were committed in the past. We must bury our dark past and forge forward as one people with a common destiny”.
Another stated, “A lot of atrocities happened under the political traditions that gave birth to NPP and NDC. That’s why we must put the past behind us and forge forward with our democracy!!”.
Meanwhile, in that same interview, Dr Tony Aidoo fired shots at Members of Parliament (MPs) for failing to represent the interests of the people.
According to him, It is the political class that benefits from Ghana’s democracy.
He added. “This is not democracy. Our people are suffering, yet MPs, instead of serving the national interest, go there to serve their own personal interests. It’s not fair,”
“The big question is, who is benefiting from this democracy? It’s the political class. They are the ones benefiting. In three months, someone is appointed to a position, and yet they’ve built a mansion. It took me 20 years to build mine”, he noted.
Dr Tony Aidoo further quizzed why everyone is rushing to be a politician, “Why is everyone rushing to be a politician? Because it pays and corrupts the country at the expense of the welfare of the general Ghanaian public.”
