The deputy minority whip, Habib Iddrisu has boldly claimed Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin was very partisan in his suspension of MPs
According to Habib Iddrisu, the speaker Alban Bagbin does not have the power to suspend a Member of parliament.
He claimed that Speaker Bagbin was partisan to suspend three NPP MPs but just one NDC MP.
Speaker Bagbin following Thursday’s ministerial vetting chaos suspended the Majority Chief whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor and the minority chief whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib.
He also directed the Parliamentary Marshal to prevent the four suspended MPs from entering the chamber.
Alban Bagbin further made it clear such actions would not be accepted and cautioned of further action should similar occurrences arise in the future.
Speaking on Newsfile on February 1, 2025, Habib Iddrisu detailed, “The speaker as the head of the institution does not have the power to suspend members of parliament he doesn’t under the standing orders that we have. He doesn’t have it because you see, if you go and check the procedure of what he has done, it is too harsh, even our standing orders give how members are supposed to be suspended”.
The deputy minority whip added, “What we are saying is that, as much as the speaker is the head of the institution under Order 20 and presides over these issues, and he tries to bring calm, we are saying that the posture and the procedure he has adopted are very wrong in law.
It is very partisan, if you watch the programme, at the end of the day three minority members are suspended and one majority is suspended, on the face of it you will be able to see that clearly”, he stated.
