Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor has discovered a $500,000 fraud at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to him, this scam is one of the many fraudulent activities going on at the ECG.
He disclosed that the ECG failed to clear some critical equipment from the port on time, which led to huge financial losses to the state. The equipment which cost $500,000 was left uncleared and later auctioned at a much lower price.
Abu Jinapor revealed that the $500,000 worth container filled with electrical equipment was auctioned for Ghc100,000 and later resold to the ECG for $300,000.
“I checked with the port, and the security report I received shows that a container worth about $500,000 was imported. ECG couldn’t clear it, and somehow, someone was able to buy it at auction for 100,000 cedis, then resell it to ECG for $300,000,” Jinapor disclosed on TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, February 16, 2025,
The minister who was angered and saddened by this level of corruption has promised to bring an end to such incidents in the country.
“It will stop. And I mean it will stop. Whatever it takes to stop that, no matter how unpopular that may be, we must take action.“
This revelation has caused Ghanaians to demand an immediate investigations into the procurement process of the ECG.
