The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill (anti-gay bill) has found its way into parliament once again.
The controversial bill which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities and their promotion in Ghana, has been reintroduced to Parliament, spearheaded by Samuel Nartey George-Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo Prampram and Reverend John Ntim Fordjour-Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin South.
The bill was initially passed by the 8th Parliament but did not receive presidential assent under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.
Speaking to Citi News on Thursday, February 27, 2025, Rev. Ntim Fordjour confirmed the bill’s reintroduction and urged President John Dramani Mahama to sign it into law once it is passed.
“Myself, Sam George, Hon Bedzrah, Hon Alhassan Tampuli, Hon Abdul Kabiru, and Hon Ekow Vincent—we have reintroduced it to support the speedy passage of the bill so that he can assent to it. It has been admitted and received, and the processes will now be set in motion,” he said.
Rev. Fordjour emphasized that since it is the same bill previously passed, no significant delays are expected.
He also highlighted strong support from traditional leaders, religious groups, and Parliament Speaker Alban Bagbin, who has been vocal in his backing of the legislation.
With Parliament set to begin deliberations, the bill’s proponents are optimistic about a quick passage, setting the stage for President Mahama to make a final decision on its fate.
