Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has revealed that the Parent -Teacher Associations (PTA) is set to return to public schools.
He made this announcement at a public forum.
The Minister indicated that PTAs are an essential part of public schools as they champion community involvement.
“I am particularly happy to announce that PTAs will be introduced back into the management of education under the presidency of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, to work for parents and teachers to work together to improve learning outcomes in our educational institutions. And for PTAs to support our educational institutions to produce quality human capital for the country,” he stated.
The return of PTAs will provide additional support to public schools, helping to address infrastructure development, student discipline, and academic performance and other concerns.
Previously, PTAs played a key role in shaping policies at the school level, but their influence had been reduced in recent years.
With this policy shift, the government aims to create a more inclusive education system where parents, teachers, and administrators work together to ensure quality education for all students.
As the government moves forward with this decision, schools are expected to formally reintegrate PTAs into their administrative frameworks in the coming months.
The National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTAs) in 2024 called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately reverse the name Parent Association (PA) imposed on the organisation to its original name, Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).
The council said the new name was not the least welcomed as the generality of its members viewed it as an imposition.
